All About Lepidolite

Lepidolite is named after the Greek word for scale due to its scale-like appearance. It is commonly called the ‘grandmother stone’ or the ‘peace stone’ due to its calming and nurturing abilities. It was discovered in 1861 and is part of the Mica family.  Lepidolite alone is not a hardy stone but it is often mixed with quartz which provides more durability. Lepidolite contains one of the most powerful properties in the world, Lithium. Lithium is found in most household appliances, in eyeshadows back in the day, and in mood-stabilizing medications. While its byproducts are found in common everyday items, the formation of Lepidolite is relatively rare and is concentrated only in parts of the world where lithium is found. This makes lepidolite a highly sought after and rare gem.

Where Its From

Lepidolite is found on several continents and is primarily mined in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Sweden, and the United States, among others.

Imitation vs Real

Lepidolite is commonly found in purple or pink tones. The mica components often result in a bright flash as the surface reflects light away. It is pearly and usually opaque, though can be found in translucent form as well. Real Lepidolite should be cool to touch. Fake lepidolite is usually made of colored resin. Look for pooled color splotches from the resin process.
